See the assumptions behind the allowances

Base local service allowances for a two-bedroom home: DIY $400; truck plus hired help $950; full-service $1,800. These are editable starting assumptions, not a rate survey. Other home sizes use the same model across both tools.

Distance multiplies the base by 1, 1.4 or 2.2. Access multiplies it by 1, 1.12 or 1.25; timing by 0.92, 1 or 1.18. A few special items add 8%; many add 16%. Service amounts round to the nearest $10. Actual quotes may fall outside these assumptions.

Supplies and a single month of storage use separate home-size allowances. Cleaning, travel and setup start at $0 because they depend on your arrangements. Enter quotes or planned spending for these items. The reserve is uncommitted money, not a fee charged by a mover.

For US interstate moves, review FMCSA’s guidance on written estimates. That guidance does not validate this tool’s sample prices.

How to use this moving expense calculator

Use this page to calculate moving expenses before you commit to dates, quotes, or storage. The estimate is intentionally broad because final costs depend on inventory, access, timing, company rules, utility requirements, and the condition of both homes.

Frequently asked questions

What moving expenses should I budget for?

Budget for the main move, packing supplies, storage if dates do not line up, cleaning, travel or temporary lodging, utility setup, deposits, small replacement items, and an emergency buffer.

What is the difference between moving cost and moving expenses?

Moving cost usually means the core move itself, such as movers, truck rental, labor, distance, and access fees. Moving expenses are broader and include the surrounding costs of leaving one home and setting up the next one.

How much should I set aside for unexpected moving costs?

A practical planning buffer is about 10% to 15% of your expected moving expenses. Use a higher buffer if the move is long-distance, last-minute, or includes storage.

Are cleaning and storage part of moving expenses?

Yes. Cleaning and storage are common moving-related expenses when leases, closing dates, or move-in timing do not line up cleanly.

How can I reduce moving expenses?

Declutter before packing, compare written quotes, avoid peak dates where possible, pack non-fragile items yourself, use supplies you already own, and reduce storage time.
